The issue in most cases is a poor strategic framework and lack of communication, as well as an ineffective decision-making process.
Make sure that you have a strategic plan and a strategic planning process. Without a clear set of prioritized objectives, decisions and timelines, how will each team and employee understand their role and how they are contributing to the company’s success each week, month and quarter?
Then there is the issue of being committed to your strategy. If the team doesn’t understand the ‘why’ behind the strategy, how can you expect them to take ownership and not drift off the path?
A strategy is worthless without a good execution leader and process. Do not assume that your existing team has the bandwidth to manage and execute your plan. 67% of strategic plans fail at execution!
Creating a culture of accountability starts at the top – leaders must set the tone. Failure to do so can cause performance and morale issues and hurts retention.
How do you want your people to perform every single day?
- Your culture becomes a set of norms and is what gets the team to focus on and deliver what is important to the business. You need to set expectations for what behaviours are desirable, and which ones are unacceptable.
- To then link culture to strategy, leaders must explain how the desirable behaviours are linked to achieving your strategic priorities and goals.
The more clearly you define cultural norms and expectations and show how they are tied to your strategy, the easier it is to get people to demonstrate the right behaviours all the time, as they execute your plan.
