Core Business Intelligence CEO, Dean Lucrezi, shared his personal story about the transformative impact of mentorship on both immigrants and students.
“I want to share some personal insights on the challenges both groups face when entering the job market.”
For Immigrants / Student Immigrants:
- Language Barriers: Immigrants often grapple with language hurdles, which can affect their confidence, communication skills and job search.
- Cultural Differences: Understanding and adapting to a new culture’s workplace norms can be overwhelming.
- Credential Recognition: Degrees and qualifications earned abroad might not be accepted in their new country or is often devalued.
- Work Experience Gap: Many newcomers face difficulties translating their skills and experiences to the local job market.
- Networking Challenges: Building a professional network can be tough without guidance and connections, as they often face racism and discrimination.
For College Students:
- Lack of Experience & Business Etiquette:New graduates often struggle to compete with more experienced candidates.
- Resume Building: Crafting a compelling resume and LinkedIn profile that highlights skills, accomplishments and potential can be a daunting task.
- Interview Anxiety: Navigating the interview process can be intimidating for first timers.
- Uncertain Career Paths: College students are often unsure which career direction to take.
- Networking Gap: Limited professional networks can hinder job opportunities.
Why Mentorship Matters
Mentorship bridges these gaps, offering invaluable support, guidance and wisdom. As someone deeply committed to nurturing talent and fostering inclusion, I believe that mentorship is a reciprocal journey that enriches both mentor and mentee.
When we share our knowledge and show that we sincerely care, it ignites a deeper passion and excitement within, so the mentee wants to listen, learn and then apply their knowledge and work ethic for their new employer. Building up their confidence before they enter the job market is critical, so they start to believe that their ideas, skills and knowledge will be valued by a future employer.
My Personal Commitment
I have been fortunate to witness remarkable transformations through my over 25 mentorship experiences, and I’m not done yet! It’s a privilege to share my experience and knowledge with those eager to learn and grow.
